Post your rugby photos

Some ladies rugby from last week. Was photographing for the team in green which suffered a big loss, so less clear runs with a ball, but fierce defending ;-)
Some players wear a type of leg bands. They look unusual. What are they?

I think you are talking about the bands just above the knee. In rugby when the ball goes over the side-line, it is thrown in with a so-called "Line-out". The teams set up a line of up-to 7 players (team trowing in can set the number) with a gap of about 1m in between. The ball needs to be thrown in through the middle. The team throwing decides how far they will throw (so that is their advantage, calling a code or something similar so their team knows where they are going to throw and the opponent does not know).
The ball is (usually) thrown high up and some player jump, while one or two others support the jump by "lifting". The bands help the lifters with more grip on the player they are lifting.

Here is an example, after the ball was caught, were you can see one of the lifting players with hands on the band I think you mean. If you meant other bands, then I misunderstood your question.

Here are some shots from other matches showing the "line out". Not everybody uses those bands.

Yes, those bands. I saw the protrusions and wondered what purpose they served.

I had no idea there was any jumping/lifting in rugby! Pretty nifty ‘handles’ to push a player up. Thanks for the info.

Men don't seem to wear them. They are just being pulled up by their clothes! It's really funny to see.
Well, not everybody is wearing them. When I played, they were not used. Nowadays you see them on the higher levels a bit more and the ladies match was played at the highest level in the Netherlands and those teams have Dutch team players as well, so they take the habits from the national team to their own teams. Most of my men's rugby is lower levels, where players tend to use them less.

In the past lifting was usually done at the shorts for the grip. With the bands just above the knee, you get grip a bit lower on the leg, hence the hands of the lifted player reach higher in the air. As the ball needs to be thrown in through the middle of the line-out, the higher the jumper gets, the higher you can throw and less chances for the opposite jumper to get the ball if they can not reach that height.

Some rugby from last weekend. One of the local clubs playing their last official season match. As my club was playing on the same pitch the match after, I shot their match for them.
Again great shots, Jan.

Some more women's rugby from a week ago:

About the women's match. I was looking at the pics and noticed that the socks don't match up. I would expect a team to have a certain standard as to the attire, so they would all wear the same socks. But I see different socks within both teams and there is also a player from Black/Blue team wearing green&yellow socks!

Just something that caught my eye so I'm curious.
