Ardchattan Priory, Loch Etive, NW Scotland" These stones are mostly late medieval, dating from the 15th to early 16th centuries, but there is one, a Celtic-style cross, which dates from the 10th century. This is an important grave marker, and its intricate carving is slightly weathered but still absolutely beautiful. Since it pre-dates Ardchattan by at least 300 years, it is believed to have been brought here from elsewhere.

The other stones are skilfully engraved with entwined foliage, possibly by craftsmen working in the Loch Awe area (whose efforts we’ve seen elsewhere, at places such as Kilmory Knap). There are two with figures on them, presumably Priors or other important church figures."

Michael Howells was the brother of the actress Ursula Howells, who featured in one or two films. Michael died of polio at the age of nine. His parents never got over it, especially his father, Herbert, who was a composer, mainly of church music. Mick's ghost is present in much of the music that Herbert composed after 1935.

So sad.

This is small monument for a young boy, called Keesje Brijde who was shot by the Nazis in December 1944 whilst out looking for coals for his mum's fireplace.

This happened in the midst of what is known as the "hunger Winter", the last Winter of the Nazi occupation in the Netherlands. The south of the country was liberated but the north was not and the Germans cut off all supplies so people were literally starving.

Right after the war some people from the neighbourhood put up a wooden cross with Keesje's name on it in the spot where he died. Later it had to be moved to where it is now and it was adopted by a nearby school.

Every year on 4 May when we have our national remembrance day, there is a ceremony in which children of said school lay flowers on the monument and read poetry.

I've seen it so often but this is the first time I photographed it. I thought that although it's not on a cemetery, it does fit in this thread.

It's good the tragedy is remembered in such a way otherwise it would be lost to history.
