This is small monument for a young boy, called Keesje Brijde who was shot by the Nazis in December 1944 whilst out looking for coals for his mum's fireplace.
This happened in the midst of what is known as the "hunger Winter", the last Winter of the Nazi occupation in the Netherlands. The south of the country was liberated but the north was not and the Germans cut off all supplies so people were literally starving.
Right after the war some people from the neighbourhood put up a wooden cross with Keesje's name on it in the spot where he died. Later it had to be moved to where it is now and it was adopted by a nearby school.
Every year on 4 May when we have our national remembrance day, there is a ceremony in which children of said school lay flowers on the monument and read poetry.
I've seen it so often but this is the first time I photographed it. I thought that although it's not on a cemetery, it does fit in this thread.
