Close cousin to Henbit Deadnettle, this is Red Deadnettle. Neither are native to the US, but have spread throughout. Both are edible and are used in herbal medicines.

It's a real skill to photograph flowers well. I find it hard because there is always so much else in the frame, surrounding the flower(s). But here's a shot from yesterday that I quite like.

Obsidentify says: Crocus chrysanthus + Crocus x luteus, whatever that means. A crocus but some cross breeding?
