I'm still thinking of buying the R5 mark II. Should I or should I wait? I BOUGHT IT!!!

Saves you quite a bit of cash.

the 5 day is only $30 more than a 3 day and they will credit the 3 day to the purchase if bought within 30 days after the rental.

Jan Wegener posted some R5ii High ISO CR3 files online so I downloaded one to see how much I could crop it. With high ISO I won't get the same quality as if it were low ISO but want to see as this is the type of testing I will be doing. Here is his original and my crop, of course both knocked down to 1600x1600 max.

Trying to mimic what I could get with an R7 cropped in. I pulled it in to LR and then used Topaz AI Denoise and after AI Sharpen

That's a good deal!

Looks fine to me, but yeah, it's a downsized file of course so hard to judge. How high was ISO?

Was Jan Wegener pleased with the high ISO files? Maybe Duade Paton has a video about the R5m2 vs the R6m2 or vs the R7 even, as he often does these comparison videos.

12,800, near the upper limit for the R6ii and way above what I would normally shoot with the R7. I am looking at various videos from Jan and Duade and the Norcrofts to get some ideas on what people think. There are several comparison videos between the R5ii and R6ii.

And yet, everybody is different, everybody shoots differently, so nothing is as good as your own experience. That at least is what I think, although, sure the opinion of experienced bird photographers does help, renting and trying it out for yourself is best.

That is why I am renting it Apr 15 to 19.

A quick question, I have heard that the battery life is not the best i.e. less than 1000 shots on a charge, since if I go to the ponds and there are a lot of birds I can easily shoot 1000 to 2000 shots.

will the batteries from the R6/R7 LP-E6NH work in the R5ii and if they do what compromises do they experience?

I easily get 2000-3000 shots and often 4000-5000, it does depend on how you shoot and your settings.

Older original Canon LP-E6xx work but you need the new LP-E6P for some video functions and pre-capture. Older non-Canon do not work.

I shoot my R5ii gripped, so have 2 batteries in at the time. The batteries last for more than one game, although I do sometimes change batteries when it is not yet needed, just to avoid to have to change batteries when I might not want to (e.g. if it might be raining).
I did manage to get at least 9000 shots with a set of batteries in the grip and did not yet get a warning that batteries were near empty. So 4000 on a single battery definitely must be achievable.

I did not yet try the older batteries. Like mentioned, some video functions and pre-capture would not work. I think I read something about (wireless) connectivity not working with older batteries.

I also have the camera set to airplane mode so it doesn't consume power for connectivity. I think the energy consumers are similar among the Canon R series cameras.

When renting with limited LP-E6P batteries available, make sure to test pre-capture in an early stage. And maybe start with the older batteries when going through the menus to set things up or to see what is in the menus.

Yeah, see, you two take a lot of shots during one session. I don't. And with the shutter count going back to zero as soon as you have downloaded the images, with my few hundred shots at a time, I have absolutely zero idea how many shots I can take on a fully charged battery. This is the one thing I dislike about the camera. Why did they change that? :banghead:

Well I feel for you in this misery :namaste: I never look at the count the camera tells me, I just know the general amount of photos I ussually take during a match.

LOL Thanks!
But yes, that's it. I don't have more than maybe a few hundred shots per outing so I have multiple shoots on one battery and no idea how many shots on that one charge. I cannot understand why Canon removed chose to do this. Unless it's a setting somewhere that we all overlooked. My hope is that they will bring it back in a firmware update.
