I'm still thinking of buying the R5 mark II. Should I or should I wait? I BOUGHT IT!!!

My R5II is 8192x5464?
Yes!! Of course! I was comparing the R6II with the R7. I'll add something to my post.

R6 mark II files = 6000 x 4000

R5 mark II files = 8192 x 5464

R7 files = 6960 x 4640

absolutely wonderful shots!
Thanks. And I took them with the R6II. Just saying that the AF on the R6II is excellent.

Of course that is a big thing the R5ii is better but now earth shattering better...
I don't think it's "earth shattering better" no. But for me the AF was not the reason I bought the R5m2. I wanted it for the megapixels. Ever since I tried out the R7 I wanted a high res sensor, to have more pixels on the subject and to be able to crop a bit more. That was the only reason for me to get the R5m2. Not the AF.

The only way to know if the R5m2 is for you, is to shoot with it yourself, which you will be doing in a little while. Until then all you can go on is other people's experience, but everybody is different, everybody shoots differently.

@Levina de Ruijter I am starting to make a plan to compare the R5ii to my R6ii and R7.

I know the best test is to use the same lens for all cameras and all shots, my RF 100-500. However especially birds changing cameras on the lens to try to get the same shot with each would be tough or impossible even on a perching bird. One place I could do that is at the local airport, parked private planes about 100 yards away, I was taking pictures of birds and cars at the local mall one time and someone called the cops and they told me to leave. At the airport I could sit where the spectators and photographers sit, they have benches and don't mind you spending hours there taking shots. There I could switch from camera to camera on one lens.
Another place is the pond where the families feed the birds, I can sit there and get shots with the same lens on different cameras.

Another option is to use each camera with it's own lens, I would do something like the RF100-500, EF100-400Lii, RF 100-400, all shot at 400mm. The downside is the RF100-500 is that the RF100-500 is slightly sharper than the EF100-400 and RF100-400, not that much but on the pixel level it is noticeable, also 3 cameras with lens on each becomes a lot of gear to carry

To me that is the best way as it limits the differences by using the same lens on the same subject. Even better is to take the stationary plane pics with a tripod!

So I will probably carry the RF100-500 along with the R5ii R6ii and R7 and a tripod.

For the last several weeks we get 1 clear day and 6 days of rain and it looks to continue that way for a while

You have set yourself quite a task, Jeff. I hope you can test it the way you want to. It is best to test with the same lens on the different cameras but birds wait for no one. Except our grey herons. They will stand still for endless amounts of time. Ducks and geese in rest could be an option too.

Well if it rains during your renting week then you get to test the R5m2 in the worst of conditions. Maybe that's not too bad actually. I mean every camera and every lens performs well in ideal conditions. It's when conditions are not ideal that you begin to see the difference. Just dress warm!

A lot of new posts in this thread since my last visit. Not too much to add to what was already said.

When comparing high ISO shots, the resizing is an important part. But maybe it is even better to resize/ downsize to the format you use most for your photos to see if the results are acceptable. And off course if you crop the R5ii image, crop it and then resize it to a suitable size. I for example usually export images for the net to 2400 at the long side. I'v seen several 'poster' like prints on A4 or even A3 that look decent for their purpose (usually some event promotion).

I have not shot the R6ii, but have used the R6. I feel like the ISO on the R6 was better regarding high ISO's, but especially after resizing I didn't really notice a difference.

Furthermore I feel like the R5ii high ISO is very usuable. Here are some high ISO shots with the R5ii:
ISO 20000, f2.8, 1/1000 at 400mm

ISO 8000 , f9 , 1/2000 at 280mm

ISO 25600, f13, 1/2000 at 1120 mm

On my smugmug page there are several albums with high ISO photos. For sports I tend to crop a lot. Feel free to have a look. Here are some links (I assume posting them here for this occassion is allowed and hope they will work):

A thought just jumped into my head about the R5ii vs R7. I am going to be shooting both on the RF100-500, and also the RF100-400 (easy to carry the extra lens as I will be hanging both cameras around my neck. My thought has been and I will be testing cropping the R5ii to the same image from the R7 especially when I crop an image on the R7 which I do all the time. I wanted to see how the IQ holds up with what will be severe crops on the R5ii.

Suddenly I remembered I have the RF1.4x extender and I can do testing with the R7 with no extender (800mm FOV with 1.6 factor) and the R5ii with the RF 1.4x which becomes a 700mm f/10, slightly less length than the R7 but half a stop less light. The difference 700vs800 I think is negligible AND with 45 mpx my feeling is that I will be able to crop virtually as tight as a tight crop on the R7.
I have used the RF 1.4x on both these lenses with my R6ii and it gives very good results!

SUDDENLY the R5ii might be in my future! Will compare the high ISO performance against the R6ii, my guess is that it will be close, and the reach against the R7. From what you had said when you crop a 500mm to a 1.6 factor you end up with 17 mpx on the R5ii and it is tough to crop too much from that BUT if I use the RF1.4x to get 700mm I am still at 45 mpx and I bet I can crop as much as I can on the R7 and have much better High ISO performance (R7 limit really is about ISO 2000) and no rolling shutter.

If it works as I think it will then I will sell the R6ii and the R7 to bring down some of the price of the R5ii. I sort of hate to ask my son who does photography whether he wants one of them as first off The R6ii should get over $1,000 and the R7 probably over $500. And he has 3 Canon or 4 Canon DSLRs that he is happy with.

From what I am hearing about the R6iii is that it will be a mini R5ii, much the same but at a lower price point and they think better High ISO performance but time will tell, same with the R7ii it is at least a year out and who khows what the specs will be.

Sounds like a plan! From my own experience the RF 1.4x does really well. Unfortunately I have no samples from the R5m2 as I haven't paired it with the extender yet. But it should do just fine.

Has your son indicated he would like to switch to mirrorless too?
