I'm still thinking of buying the R5 mark II. Should I or should I wait? I BOUGHT IT!!!

Some musing, forgive me I am trying to figure out what to do...

Needing reach, the 45 mpx of the R5ii do allow more cropping and then having the RF 1.4x already to put on the 100-500 or 200-800 That could get me close to the reach of the R7, but at the cost of light. I am so unsure... At least I have a really good camera in the R6ii and a good one in the R7 (in good light). While a superzoom i.e. an F/4 say 400 or 500 they are heavy and expensive. But I also like zooms as I can find the bird at 300 or 400 and zoom in to get the shot. I had tried the 600 and 800 f/11's but they are hard to get on target and I get the same reach with the RF 1.4x on the 100-500, becomes a 420-700.

As I mentioned I am testing the R5ii for 7 days next week and the main thing I think it would give me is more pixels on target, better AF, better buffering with the CF express and digic accelerator.

If I do get it I would sell the R6ii, my son the one who likes photography the other likes his i-phone pics, doesn't want it as he likes the 50,70,80 and 90D's that I gave him, he is like me still has the previous cameras after all I still have my 7Dii and 5Dc they aren't worth much of anything but work great.

A question would be the R7. If I can crop in enough of the R5ii to mimic the R7 then I could sell the R7 but in good light, low enough ISO, and a sharp shot I can crop the R7 with its 32 mpx more than I could the R5ii I think but really need to concentrate on getting closer to the birds.

as far as safety, my wife has gone with me so there are 2 of us but she is usually to busy doing crafts etc at home, it is not really as bad as I or others have made out, just on a weekday people sitting in their cars however I am always trying to be low key.

In the pictures, the little area where the families often stand to feed the birds extends a bit out and is a great place to set up my chair.

That looks close enough! When using the R5II it has a crop mode(1.6/aps-c) but you're left with 17mp. But as I said, the more reach you need the more problems you run into with atmospheric problems. Get closer with the R5II and it won't get much better.

Depends on what you use for processing, I use C1Pro and can export to any chosen resolution( in this case about 6000x4000

I use Photoshop and Lightroom, so after processing in PS I could set the image size to the same as the R6ii

I think you want to look at the unprocessed raw file, no? Simply downsize the R7 files to 6000x4000px in Photoshop. Or upsize the R6II files to 6960px.
The R5 mark II files are 8192x5464.

Thank you, I will do that when comparing the R6ii to the R5ii and R7 after shooting it for a week. I will be agonizing and thinking for the next week until I actually have an R5ii in my hands. Then after that I will have to make up my mind of what to do.

If I remember you found the AF significantly better than your R6ii, correct? and the 45 mpx is better for cropping compared to the R6ii, I think it also has better weather sealing, overall a better camera. Again just one more week....

Yes, it seems to stick to the eye just that little bit better. But it's not perfect. It has also failed me a few times. Just saying that the difference in AF is there, but it's not that big. Look, and I said it before I think in this thread, the R6II was the first camera with which I successfully shot sedge warblers in flight. I had tried forever with all my previous cameras and the R6II was the first one where I actually managed to do it consistently, multiple times, so it wasn't just a case of once because of some good luck.

These warblers are in the reeds and every once in a while they jump up and fly to another reed 30, 40 feet away. They sing there for a while, then jump up again and fly to another reed. Their taking off is sudden, no warnings. Of course I didn't think of the pre-capture mode last summer so I had to pick them up mid flight, which is very hard. But the R6II locked on without hesitation. That means the AF on the R6II is truly excellent.
