According to Canon Rumors, the Canon R6 mark III is "definitely" coming in the first quarter of 2025.

Canon Rumors was told that the Canon EOS R6 Mark III is “definitely” coming in Q1 of 2025. The obvious moment would be during CP+, the biggest camera and imaging show in the world, organised by CIPA, the Camera & Imaging Products Association – the body that certifies things like the number of shots you get from a single battery charge, or the number of stops of compensation on image stabilization. In 2025 CP+ takes place from February 27th until March 2nd in Yokohama, Japan.

CR expects the R6 mark III to get a CFexpress card slot and will have something new with Bluetooth control, though there aren't any specifics yet.

CR also expect the announcement of at least two lenses, although they don't reveal which lenses that would be as the level of uncertainty is yet too high. They say "Specification wise, all we have heard have come from sources with spotty records, one directly sent to us and another from Weibo. Specifications reported that far ahead of announcement are to be taken with the proverbial grain of salt."

So noted.

As you know I have the R6ii and am using it more than my R7 or any of my other cameras.

I have been following all the rumors on the Specs and have been trying to decide do I really need it or should I wait for the R7 mk II but that may not come out this year at all or at the very least.
For the shooting I do I really don't need an upgrade like I didn't need to get the R5 or R5II. At the same time the CF express and better low level shooting read that high ISO really interests me as for BIF you want high speeds and end up with high ISO's.

When the R7ii comes out I will be buying it but for now it is about the R6iii. I sold a bunch of my gun collection and so the cost of it is not the issue at this time, it is do I need it.

Need it, probably not, want it, YES.

What could affect getting the R7ii is if they come out with an RF 100-500 II that can use the extenders over the entire length.

I will be interested in hear about others thoughts on the R6iii especially if you already have the R6ii

Hi Jeff!

Yeah, I'm in pretty much the same position. I have the R6II. I don't need the mark III. I would jump on a R7II though. But when is that coming?

The RF 100-500 II? Would that be the rumoured RF 100-500 internal zoom with faster glass?

According to "Ordinary Filmmaker" quoting Canon Rumors, the R6III will be announced in May. But that is announced, when will it start shipping?

The rumored specs appear to make it to have features from the R3 and R5ii and a new flippy screen not only flipping out but from the back going up or down without flipping out. With a CF Express, type B I think the faster one, and the AF from the R5ii other than the fact that it is still 24 mpx vs 45 mpx it could be as good as the R5ii but a lot less in price.

I will be renting the R5ii as I said in a week or so, this morning when they open I want to see if Hunts Photo my local camera shop will rent the R5ii WITH the battery grip as that is how I shoot all the time and want to try exactly what I would be buying, "Lens Rentals" will rent with the grip so if Hunts won't rent it then I will rent from LR, I have rented from them before.

Again if the specs hold true then to me the only real difference between the R6iii and R5ii appears to be the 24 vs. 45 mpx. I am asking myself is the extra 21 mpx (45 total) worth about $2,000?

Basically at this time, unless I fall head over heals with the R5ii, I will probably wait on a new camera until the R6iii is released and I try it as well. For the vast majority of my shooting 24 handles it and I am looking for the best low light performance for early mornings doing birds at the ponds.

I always wonder where these people get their information from. How accurate is it?

Considering all things, I think the only difference that really matters is 24mpx vs 45 mpx. For me it was a relatively easy choice as I didn't have another camera with a high res sensor, but you do, as you have the R7. I think that makes it especially hard to decide on a camera like the R5m2, with its high price tag.

I have no regrets about my purchase though. It's hands down the best camera I ever owned, but the real test will come later this season when I go shoot those sedge warblers in flight again. Last year was the first time ever I succeeded in doing that, with the R6m2. It was brilliant. If I can't get it done with the R5m2, then that would suck bigly! But I expect it to do as well or better.

Hopefully you can rent the camera with grip and do all the tests that you want to do. Has the ice melted away so it's safe to go out for you now?

Ice is gone but winds are 15-25 mph all day, very gusty and with the temps around 40F (3C?) it is chilly out.

I talked to Hunts and they will rent the grip as well, they said no one had ever asked to do that, but like with the R7 I was the first to ask to rent one, they didn't even have one for rent and they pulled one out of the counter to rent to me.

Think of renting in mid-April

Yeah, it doesn't have to freeze to be cold! Mid April sounds about right. For me too actually (to go on early morning trips to the countryside, just outside Amsterdam).

Good news that Hunts will rent you the camera with grip so you can test it exactly the way you want.

Because of my question to Hunts about a battery grip they have added that to their website as an option to rent for the R5ii. I have set up the rental from April 16-26th, 10 days. That should give me plenty of time to evaluate it.

as far as the R6iii from what I have seen so far the I only see what I would call tweaks, a better EVF (with my eyes the current one is fine), backlit sensor - slightly less noise i.e. higher ISO ( my R6ii is fine out to 25,000 ISO depending on target), CF Xpress - less rolling shutter and slightly better buffer ( but I don't notice it that much and can always shoot Electronic 1st Curtain which pretty much eliminates it), AF from R5ii - Is it going to be that much of a change from the R6ii?

SO in summary looking at all the youtubes and leaks etc. It doesn't look like the R6 mk III is going to be groundbreaking. I remember them saying that about the R7, best ever until things like rolling shutter started coming out. My feeling at this time is that moving from the R6ii to R6iii it could be like trading in a 2 year old car on the new model. Even if I decide against the R5ii is it worth the upgrade to the R6iii?

Those are my feelings too. I don't think a mk iii will give you substantially more than the mk ii gives you. I'vesaid it before, but I shot warblers in flight with the R6II where I never managed to do that before and it wasn't for lack of trying. It's a testament to how good the AF on the R6ii is. I can't see the mk ii improving on that. Not significantly anyway. Maybe they will add more video features, and yeah, that flippy screen you mentioned.

I still haven't put up my R6ii for sale. It's such a great camera that I find it hard to part with.

I have that problem also, hate to sell cameras, although I sold my 6Dii as I didnt' like it and sold my 5DIV, still have my 5D classic and 7Dii though, gave my 90D to one of my sons.

I sold only two cameras: 1DIIn and the R6. I don't regret selling the R6 one bit. Although I loved the camera, I had no emotional connection to it. But I still regret selling the 1DIIn. It was my first 1D camera and I LOVED it so much. I traded it in for the 1DIII and to this day wish I hadn't.

I also still have my 5D classic. I used it all the years I had it for non-bird stuff, for POTN challenges mostly. It made sense then because the 1D bodies had less mpx and had the 1.3x crop factor. But since switching to mirrorless I haven't picked it up. The R6, R6II and now the R5II are full frame and can do it all.
