I'm still thinking of buying the R5 mark II. Should I or should I wait? I BOUGHT IT!!!

I had rented a 600 and 800 f/11's and found the 800 hard to get BIF into the FOV I already have the RF 1.4x and use it on the 100-500 and the RF 100-400 (works well with that one) and the 200-800 so why spend the money saving it for the R5ii or R6iii and R7ii
Rather than type it here are my current lenses that I use the 1.4x on as well as the R7 1.6 effect,

Whoa, you have that down to a science almost!

BIF @800mm for me is just about undoable. I have problems with the 1.4xTC on the 100-500 already @700mm. The field of view @800mm becomes so narrow that picking up a bird in flight is just very very hard. With the 100-500+1.4xTC I can at least zoom out, find the bird, zoom back in.

There is a focus limiter on the 800/11 though, and that does help in that at least it doesn't look within the 20foot (or whatever it is) range.

Here is the USA things are suddenly up in the air as far as the release of the R6iii and the price of the R5ii due to the recent tariff war. Luckily I have 4 cameras that do a good job for me and while I want to upgrade I really don't need to.
I had asked Levina earlier in the thread about cropping in on the R5ii as I am often cropping quite a bit with my R6ii and my R7 and the R7 can be tough to crop in unless the shot is very sharp which I often have an issue with as I am not shooting fast enough shutter speeds and hand hold everything.
Here is an example of what I would call a severe crop on my R7, the full image is first and then the cropped. The full image is low resolution due to the need for the 1600x1600 for the forum.

That's a big crop. And the bird in the crop looks overly smooth, not much detail left in the feathers.

I tested cropping from the R5II didn't I? Although maybe not this severe a crop.
Okay, found the posts: https://focus-on-photography.net/th...-i-or-should-i-wait-i-bought-it.305/post-7521

Gulls are smooth birds too but I think there's more detail in the crops than in this one of the duck, but I also think your duck was farther away and the crop is bigger.

Duck was about 200 yards away which often happens at my ponds. There wasn't much detail in the feathers to begin with. But it is definitely smoother. Could be using Topaz AI Denoise and Gigapixel. I will play with it some more. Also 1000 and over ISO with the R7 and you can lose details.

My opinion on the R7 is that you can crop your heart out at low ISO speeds, but as soon as the ISO gets a bit higher, you really can't crop much or the file pretty much falls apart. I don't see that happening with the R5m2, but I don't crop that much to begin with. I never do. Having said that, a downsized 1600x1600 image for the screen, you can get away with a lot.

I try to use the R7 in better light and the R6 in low light and all the time. If I am shooting birds in the garden where I am 15-20 feet away with the 100-500 or RF 10-400 then the R7 works in poor light but I am not cropping at all for the most part in that situation, but even then I prefer the R6iii in poor light.

Going to have to watch to see what happens with the price of the R5ii and the release of the R6iii due to the tariffs. I am hearing the base price of the R5ii will be over $5,000 US.

The R5II is $3999 right now at Adorama. Tariffs for Japan are 24% so yes, the R5II price will go up to around $5000.

If I was certain I was going to buy one I would jump on it right now, but still haven't tested it yet. Should be the week of the 21st

they are predicting snow on Monday!
