I don't know, I think when a bird is dark all over with smooth feathers it can be hard to brighten them up. It's the same with the magpie I posted. They have smooth plumage and it's hard to brighten up the black parts. It starts to look hazy very quickly. These birds really need good light. But I still think your bird looks good. Better than my magpie.
Some black skimmers I found flying low, back and forth, scooping up fish just below where the dam and weir used to be, west of the concession stand at Myakka River State Park.
