Wild Birds of Europe

Penduline Tit

That's a new one for me. Where did you photograph it, Jason? Nor in our part of the world, surely?
They seem to favour reedbeds. They breed in Italy, parts of Spain and Eastern Europe and can appear anywhere in mainland Europe on migration. They are rare in Britain but I've seen a few here. This one turned up in Devon a few years ago.

Thanks for the info, Jason. Very nice catching it. In Devon of all places!

A crap shot, taken against the setting sun but I mean, coots are the worst. He went after this mallard for no reason at all. Just because he could. Bullies they are. The mallard escaped by hopping on the deck of a houseboat.

Typical Coot behaviour.
Yes. But I always wonder why. I can understand attacking another coot entering their territory, or defending their young, but a mallard minding his own business? It serves no purpose and is a waste of precious energy.

Potential competitor for the available food?

They attack just about anything coming close or in the same pond/water. I just visited a location(saw the first 3 Barn swallows!) where they often kill some of the Little Grebe offspring and/or chase the parents away.
Attack is the best defence? What Jack Dawe said, chasing away potential comp. for food/nesting etc.
