I have been thinking that people should be allowed to vote on their own image. If the same person wins, the next person gets to set the next challenge so that is no longer a reason for someone not to be able to vote for themselves. In this case, if I had voted for myself I would not have won, but sometimes - if there aren't very many entries it would have made a big difference.

When I go to pick an image for a challenge I gather several candidates and eliminate the ones I have used before (this is a personal thing - not required by the challenge) and then try to pick the one that is the best photograph that meets the challenge's requirements.

When I vote (or in case it is a challenge when I get to pick the winner), I eliminate the ones that I don't think met the requirements of the challenge and then vote for the one that I think is the best photograph. Although I loved, loved, loved ImageMaker's photo, it wasn't Noir. Otherwise I might have put it first or second. And if the photos are all equally good IMO, I vote for the ones I like best. This brings personal prejudice into it, but since it is a judgement call, I feel that I'm allowed to do that. And if I like my photo better than another one, I want to be able to say so.

I also agree with whoever suggested that in a case where the person setting the challenge is also going to judge the challenge that an example is sometimes a good idea.

After all, you already think it's a good image generally (or you would not have kept it) and you think it's good for the theme, or you wouldn't have chosen it. You also know your image and familiarity breeds appreciation.

In other words, before the voting starts, you were already partial to your image. That at least is how I see it. Others may feel differently.

As to the host posting a sample image, I personally like people to interpret a theme themselves. It can sometimes lead to unexpected and interesting results. However, if the host is also judging and feels a bit of guidance is required for the theme, why not. We could leave that up to the judging host.

In the case of the one that I judged, I thought some direction might be required as the word I used was a relatively uncommon one and when I looked it up, it didn't mean exactly what I thought it did. Probably not as brilliant an idea as I thought originally.

I agree and would add, that, while one might feel that one was being perfectly impartial, no one else could really be sure. Disallowing voting on one's own image at least removes any possible taint of partiality.
