Weekend Task #6 =/= Film Noir

With respect to the photos and the scores awarded by me:
#1 Rosalie: I'm wondering what I'm looking at, which adds greatly to the theme and the connotation I have with the theme.
#2 Stiga: I see the dramatic effect, but I think I would have preferred this photo to be more B&W within this theme
#3 Rob: The scene and B&W really fit the theme, but the lighter parts take away a bit of the drama in the scene I would expect within the theme.

Imagemaker, Jeff and Levina submitted nice photos, but I associate them less with the Film Noir theme as the other photos. But may be me, as I do not know much about film noir.

For this theme I took a photo I had in color in which I saw some strong contrasts and the road leading to brighter spot in the distance and thought a B&W conversion made it suitable for this theme. I would not have thought about such a conversion if it wasn't for the theme of this thread. That (to me at least) is the fun part of participating in challenges like this on a forum like this).

In this case, I felt my photo was more of a silhouette than a low key photo because some of it was too bright, but I entered it anyway because I couldn't resist. So i would not have voted on my own image even if I was allowed. I was trying to get silhouettes by shooting in a dark room what was reflected in a mirror.

This is one of my early attempts which I have made b&w. I am reflected in the mirror in front of me. I realized that my camera lens was reflecting the the reflection of the window behind me. So I took the best one of the reflections of my head and edited the best lens reflection into the middle of it, This is an unedited attempt because when I edit them it strips the exif

Rule #6 for entry was to Title your image and I felt it was an important rule. I thought Lavina's title was perfect for her shot. I also felt that Film-Noir would be better in black and white. I really liked the dark theme of the cemetery, that RDWP entered, but I thought that there was too much texture in the angel which was why I didn't give it a higher place.

#1 Jan
#2 Rosalie
#3 Rob
I think I should have been more precise in my definition of what film noir is. It's funny how, when you know something, you assume other people do too.

Film noir is mostly associated with films that deal with crime and suspense and they often convey a feeling of unease, of danger, of alienation. So it's not just low-key or a contrasty look, the subject matter itself is dark. In that sense only three images made that connection for me: Rob's statue, Rosalie's hole in the head and Jan's lonely cyclist on a dark country road where anything can happen.

I loved Imagemaker's image. If the theme had been "low-key portrait" it would have been my #1 pick. Jeff's flower is also beautiful, as is Martin's landscape. But they are not film noir.

My own image was on the edge. I had a very different image in mind but simply couldn't find the time to shoot it, so I used an image from the past and added a title that gave it meaning (with a reference to a classic Hitchcock film - maybe Rosalie knows which one I mean? Although that film is not a film noir).

Thank you for pointing it out, I totally read over it and assuming I more or less knew the rules, I do not read the rules in the new threads... I will try to remember it from now on.

Thanks for the explanantion. Your title (good that people title their photos ;) ) made me wonder what I was looking because I knew it had to be a shillouette. I just wondered about the see through, but a mirror is indeed a simpleexplanation once you know it (y)
