Weekend Task #3 - Portraits of Photographers at work - no selfies only of others - VOTING WEEK

It's a bit complicated. This game has history as it is based on another, old game on our former forum (Photography-on-the.net). We had the same discussion there too years ago and decided to do it this way so that the host could also participate. We can reopen that discussion if we must.

I came from Smugmug and there the person who picks the topic posts examples, and then picks the winner. But I don't want to rock any boats - no need to change what is working.

I was thinking that the person picking the topic should not even be entering the contest. Seems like a conflict of interest. Then there wouldn't be any problem of voting for their own photo.

I added a rule that contestants can't vote for their own image.

We had two competitions, one with the host picking the winner and another where people could vote. We are now trying to combine the two competitions. It is the host who decides if they want to go with the voting system in their week or if they want to pick the winner themselves (so no voting).

This competition is based on two old competitions and we took a little bit of both when we made this new competition. But the rules aren't written in stone. If people aren't happy with the rules, and there is consensus about it, we can change them.

I thought that Jeff's photo was the best photograph but it was obviously posed and was not a working photographer
tacphotog' s picture showed active photography and it made me smile. As did levina's picture. In most of the other pictures we saw only the photographer and not what they were taking a picture of or else the subject almost blocked out the photographer. (It is only today that I was able to find the photographer in the wedding picture)

I interpreted a photo like Jeff's as a photographer at work who paused for a moment to have his picture taken. He had his camera there, arm on it. So the moment the photo was taken was an interruption. But he was at work.

He was at work shooting reenactors, people in uniforms of the civil war, with his view camera but the tourists including myself kept interrupting him and while he was leaning on his camera waiting for use to get out of the way I snapped his portrait, he then went right back to work.

I've been thinking about what I said above in my response to Rosalie.

I want to add that in my experience different people will more often than not interpret a theme differently. I think it's important for people to feel free to interpret a theme in their own way and not feel restricted to a narrow interpretation. I myself have been known to interpret themes in a bit of an unusual way at times. And I think that's fine. In a voting week the voters will decide if it works, in a "host picks the winner" week, the host decides if it works.

The other game on POTN has always done the 3-2-1 count but we can change it. I'll wait for Martin and Rob to chime in. See if ties happen often in the 3-2-1 scheme.

Good point. In fact I believe this was a rule in the voting game on POTN that in case of a tie the host decides who wins. I will add that rule to the template in the sticky.


That's an interesting idea, Jan. I like it very much. I'm just not sure a poll with a #1, #2 and #3 vote can be set up. But if it can be done, then I'm all for it. I'm going to look into it. And if it's not possible in the core software, I will look if there maybe is an add-on we can install.

5-3-1 would help in some cases, but the 3-2-1 count is easier to total. I think. Yes, at POTN the statement "If the votes result in a tie, the host will make the final decision." was included in the Rules.

The way I would make the decision in the case of a tie for Gold, was to go with the most first place votes, or seconds etc - which would have pretty much the same effect as a 5-3-1 system anyway.

If the poll system would work, it would help with the calculations in the case of many entries (as with WET). I've been using an Excel spreadsheet I made, since the POTN days, with a kind of "checksum" - happy to post if anyone wants it.
