Weekend Task #3 - Portraits of Photographers at work - no selfies only of others - VOTING WEEK

It's all good, Jeff. I was just surprised is all. Your portrait was my #1 pick too. I think it's great.

Thank you very much, as I mentioned it is one of the VERY few head and shoulders I have done, guess I am shy about asking people to pose, mostly just shoot and see what I get. I may try to start doing more portraits, once it gets warm again. Mostly I just sit by the pond looking for birds, lonely and contemplative.
And for years my photography was going places with the kids and carrying a camera and just shooting what was around, tons of pictures of Disney World! In fact I think I might start a Disney thread

Ok if I don't vote in the challenge here are the results followed by when I did vote

1) Jeff 17
2) 3 way tie Tacphotog, Brother, Rosalie 10
3) Levina 9

with me voting

For the Gold: Jeff with 20 points
For the Silver: Tacphotog with 12 points
For the Bronze: Rosalie with 11 points

The main difference is who will decide on the next contest.
Well, fact is, it wasn't in the rules. And as such I suggest we leave it as is.

However, if nobody minds, I will put in a new rule in the template in the sticky that we can't vote for our own images. :D

#1 Rosalie
#2 Jeff
#3 BrotherConstant
I picked Rosalie's entry as my favourite because I thought it was unique. For her to have taken that, underwater, in 1998 with a film camera is amazing. And I like how it looks.
I picked Jeff's pic as #2 because it is an excellent portrait of a man who seems totally himself. He doesn't pose. And the camera is beautiful!
I picked BrotherConstant's pic as my #3 because I just like it. I like the mood, the concentration on the photographer's face and I also like the processing.

It was difficult though because all entries were good and I really struggled with the voting.

Jan- I was hoping the guy in the background would post his photo of you :)
I wasn't in any of the photos that she (a woman, not a guy ;-) ) posted online. I only was opposite to her during one half and shot the other half from the same side of the pitch. Here is one of another photograper from a few years ago. And taken on a sunny day, not the cold day on which the photo was taken that I posted for this challenge .

I think it would be better to count the votes as 5 for first, 3 for second and one for third. This is the way it is done in every competion that I know of and would prevent ties
Friends, we should talk about this suggestion. Not sure it will always prevent a tie, but they would become less likely.

I was also thinking about the rule that in a voting week the runner up starts the new challenge if the host wins again. Maybe not everybody is keen to do that. How do you all think about changing that? One option could be to ask for a volunteer to do it (first to say yes gets the job).

Thoughts everybody? @Stiga and @RDWP ?

I think the different scoring with 5,3 and 1 may give more separation in the overall ranking, so I assume it is better than 3-2-1 on the long run. (It partially depends on the number of voters what scale for scoring is more suitable).

The suggestion that if the host wins again, the runner-up will be picked for the next challenge is a good one.

Furthermore it may be good to have guidance in case of a tie between photos. I suggest that if there is a tie for the position who gets to host the next challenge, the host can have a final vote in deciding who is the winner.
You do not want an additional round of voting, due to time constraints in starting the next challenge, so a swift decision is desirable. Another decider could be who of the tied photographers has hosted the challenge least, so he or she gets that chance to host. But as the challenges run longer, the adminstration of who hosted how many challenges, becomes a burden and unpractical.

I do not know the possibilities for polls, but it could be nice to have a poll to do the voting. A poll including the photos maybe to much work, but a poll with the names of the contenders, might be doable.

The other game on POTN has always done the 3-2-1 count but we can change it. I'll wait for Martin and Rob to chime in. See if ties happen often in the 3-2-1 scheme.

Okay. Noted.

Good point. In fact I believe this was a rule in the voting game on POTN that in case of a tie the host decides who wins. I will add that rule to the template in the sticky.

That's an interesting idea, Jan. I like it very much. I'm just not sure a poll with a #1, #2 and #3 vote can be set up. But if it can be done, then I'm all for it. I'm going to look into it. And if it's not possible in the core software, I will look if there maybe is an add-on we can install.

Well, that was quick. A poll with a #1, #2 and #3 position can't be done. I will see if there is an add-on that could do it.

I have added two new rules to the voting process in the template in the sticky:
1. in case of a tie, the host decides who wins
2. contestants can't vote for their own image

I could imagine that a poll is difficult as it would multi-option and different scores, so it does not fit the basic polls. Thanks for checking on it.

Yes. I can make a poll with three choices. But I can't rank them as #1, #2 or #3, let alone make them different rankings for different voters.

I contacted tacphotog and he is rather busy at the moment but he gave me a theme and asked me to set it up for him. So if no one objects, I'll go start the next challenge.

I was thinking that the person picking the topic should not even be entering the contest. Seems like a conflict of interest. Then there wouldn't be any problem of voting for their own photo.

If if was up to me, and you default to the three way tie, I vote that it goes to tacphotog

It's a bit complicated. This game has history as it is based on another, old game on our former forum (Photography-on-the.net). We had the same discussion there too years ago and decided to do it this way so that the host could also participate. We can reopen that discussion if we must.

Thank you for that. I didn't realize what I had until I got the photos back. I was diving while my husband was going through SCUBA training. On a subsequent dive, we were doing a drift cave dive, and someone asked me if I wanted him to take my photo, and I handed him my camera. When I got it back, I didn't clip it onto my BCD correctly, and it floated away - I think when we were in a cave because it would have surfaced otherwise. Bob told me that the next UW camera I got he was going to attach it to my nipple :giggle:
