Then and Now

I've been to Amsterdam 5 times - 1950 when I was 12.5 and taller than my mom, 2009 with my second granddaughter B, 2016 with my husband Bob to see the tulips, 2018 with my youngest granddaughter J on our way to Tanzania and 2022 with my oldest grandson M and his wife to get on a Rhine cruise. It is one of my favorite cities and I love the airport. I wanted to get back to both Alkmaar and Volendam because of my dad's photos and movie. And we had a nice time there - we went to the Museum and the Grote Kirk, and also did some cemetery documentation. Arriving in Alkmaar

I followed the link to your blog and read the whole story about Alkmaar. Great story telling. It was a pleasure to read.

Each day is a separate page, with Previous (for the previous day) and Next for the next day at the end of the day. The next day to that one was our visit to the current cheese market and the day after that was flying home. Also there is a Table of contents at the top right - usually with the name of the place in it. One of the sections is called Raison d'Etre and I wrote

I wanted to revisit some of the places in the Netherlands where I had been in 1950 when I was 12. Of course we were in Amsterdam, but I have been in Amsterdam since 1950. I remembered going to Marken and Volendam, and the Ama cruise had Volendam as one of the ports. The cruise also went to Antwerp in Belgium and Antwerp was a place that we visited in 1950.

And I also remember the cheese market in Alkmaar. So I made hotel reservations in Alkmaar at the end of the cruise on a Friday when the cheese market would be in operation. I ordered some prints of my dad's pictures of Holland and Belgium and this proved to be a great idea.

I finally had time to look at the movie. It is extraordinary. Alkmaar is a town I know very well, spent a lot of time there during my adolescence. It's amazing to see it from a time when I wasn't born yet. And Volendam. Although I don't know the place, but to see people in their folk costumes. It's amazing. Thank you for sharing your photos, movies and stories with us, Rosalie.

Molo di San Vincenzo Light - This station at the end of the mile long Mole di San Vincenzo, the main breakwater for the harbor of Naples was established in the early 1900s, but this actual lighthouse was built after WWII. In 2008, it was a striking red painted round masonry tower with lantern and gallery, painted red with white trim. The statue is of of San Gennaro.

When I looked at my photos from 1964, I realized that I had an old photo of this same lighthouse as it was then. Left 1964 probably taken going out to the carrier. Right 2008 from a cruise ship

This is a comparison of photos taken in 1964 and 2019.

The Main difference between 2019 and now for the Church of Ste. Marthe is that in 1964, the tower was missing.

I took only one photo in 1964, and I was standing across the street. In 2019, I was driving by in a taxi and it was not possible to get the same angle. But I can see that in 1964 there were barriers across (maybe because of falling debris). This year apparently the church was open as there are people on the steps.
