Red-crested pochards. I get a whole group of them every spring. They stay through summer, then leave. I have no idea what they are doing in my canal. They do quarrel about females but they don't breed.

Shot from the deck of a houseboat.

Red-crested Pochard is a scarce bird where I live, but we have a female who has roamed around the area for the last 17 years. She is often to be found on a National Trust duckpond near us in the company of Mallards, Mandarins and Moorhens. She has just been joined by a handsome male who is being quite solicitous. Will they get it together?
