These are great, Jan. I'm really surprised by the green on the side of his head. I can't recall ever having seen that. I usually see dark blue and/or dark purple hues on these birds, but not green.
It's not just Tufted ducks, look at the difference on these Mallards. I think it's not only the season but also the angle of the light.Hi Jan and Levina, the colours do change later in the year they seem dark grey on their cheeks, you can see the green in this one as it turns to the sun, early spring last year.

Yes indeed. Good comparison. I think it's not just the angle of the light but also what the reflected light that hits the bird is bouncing off of. Only the names. It's pretty random. There's a slight general tendency for the larger birds to be called pigeons and the smaller ones doves, but that's by no means always the case.That's a pretty bird.
