Oh my... this is beautiful, Sid. He looks so gorgeous. And the pose is wonderful with that perfect wing spread. A great image.

Thank you Levina :)
Amazing! I've heard they are doing better lately, are you near a sanctuary?
(and I'm happy to see you posting here!)

They are doing much better, particularly here in West Wales where you see them in the sky where ever you go. We don't have sanctuarys as such, there are a few well supported, sort of official, feeding stations where you can see 200 plus birds on a daily basis though none are within an hour and a half of where I am. The most likely reason for their presence is muck spreading a large farm over a few days. We had 6 kites and 3 buzzards today. :)

Cheers!

Thanks very much, John. No, it's an adult male, but it was a very bight day, which made the plumage look a bit brownish. Maybe I should correct that
I know very little of birds, Jack. I was just looking at the bill. I thought maybe it's begging for food. I wouldn't change a thing in that image.

Ah, no. The bird was actually thinking of 'sunning' This is where they spread their wings and tails—it's thought this helps maintain the feathers—and open their mouths (probably to disperse the sun's heat). Here you can just see that the tail is spread, but the wings aren't. He was well aware of me and didn't quite have the courage.

Lapland Bunting (or Longspur). This is perhaps more of a Scandinavian than European bird for us, but it's an annual visitor in small numbers and I shot this one not far from home. Like a lot of solitary buntings in winter it was confiding to a fault. My best shots were all spoiled because it was at or within the minumum focus distance of my lens. These are uncropped. I would love to have lain down for a better angle, but I was wearing my best suit at the time (don't ask).

Lovely shots, Jason, especially #2 is really nice. Gorgeous little bird. You must have been really close indeed!
