Weekend Task #7 Navigation/ navigating > voting week

Levina's photo was so perfect for the challenge that it completely scrambled my brain and I didn't even think of lighthouses or even maps which would also work IMHO. I wanted to find a good photo of the compass on our boat or a photo of the radar or the electronic charts, but the best I could do was the documentary photo that I posted.
I'm really sorry. It was the best pic for the theme that I had. I thought yours was a very good photo though (it was my #2 pick) but I was surprised you didn't post a lighthouse.

This actually reminds me of a weekly challenge back on POTN. The theme was: Starts with a B. I don't know what I posted, something with "Balance" I think. And my main subjects are birds. Somebody else posted a bird and I was like: oh, right, a bird! Go figure.

I was hung up on the fact that he is pointing in the wrong direction - back toward Italy instead of toward the Atlantic.
Really?

Don't be sorry - it was a great photo
Yes really. He is on the waterfront in Barcelona and he is pointing toward the water which is the Mediterranean.

When the photo of the pilot boat was posted I realized that I could post one like that as I have quite a few of them but that would be copycat. I thought the statues of the old time navigators were a good idea. But when I saw the statue of Columbus in Barcelona I was hung up on the fact that he is pointing in the wrong direction - back toward Italy instead of toward the Atlantic. So I took the more Noir photo of the failed navigation.
I recognize it sometimes is a bit of dilemma when deciding what to submit for these kind of challenges and when to post. When everybody waits, the thread/ contest may get out of sight, so regular posting helps to keep in under attention. When you wait, chances are that others submit the type of photo you might wanted to post, which may then become withholding. Waiting however can also help to get inspiration from what others post.
There is no rule against 'similar' photos, but the 'copycat' feeling does influence one (lets call it a moral compass in this week's theme :ROFLMAO:). The theme also plays part, since a broad theme tends to ask for some creativity, increasing the copycat feeling. If the theme would have been "lighthouses" or "compass" then there would be less tendency to get the copycat feeling.

In the end this is photo forum, so it is about the 'best' photo as well, not originality. But in these contests creativity can aid in winning.

I myself would never thought of Columbus pointing in the wrong direction. With all your travelling experience, navigation and direction are more second nature to you than it is to me (and likely most of us here on this forum).

I can't really take credit for that - it was pointed out that he was pointing in the wrong direction on the hop-on-hop-off bus tour that I took. So it is a fairly well known faux pas like the bananas pointing in the wrong direction in the picture in the opera house in Costa Rica

At least the knowlegde stems from a travelling experience, be it the touristy hop-on-hop-off ;)

Took that when I was in the Navy back in '76 and wasn't worried about where he was pointing. Barcelona was a very interesting city although my favorite port was Palma.
