Naval Ships of the World - Post Yours

Whoa, that's probably a lot of hours spent? Impressive.

In the winter when it is 10F or lower I don't go outside much so have plenty of time.

USS Olympia

C-6 was the initial descriptor. it was a protected cruiser in that it had an armored deck to protect machinery and such below. they did not have armor on the sides (armored cruisers). it served from 1895 until 1922.

the Olympia had the distinction of bringing home the Unknown Soldier to the US from WWI. they casket and its case was too big to fit through any of the hatches on the ship so it was lashed to the deck and had a 24 hour armed guard from the US Marine Corp for its entire journey. the ship had some horrific weather crossing the north atlantic but the guards stood fast.

interesting bit of information is that the ship had no bathing facilities. each crewman had a bucket, and a spot along a wall in a cross-ship passageway where they could sit and have a sponge bath if you will. they drew water off of a spigot and lined up about 14 abreast and washed. crew also had no permanent birthing. they slung hammocks from hooks in the overhead along the gun decks which also served as the mess decks
