Yeah, the inner city of Amsterdam is very old and some of these buildings need a bit of support. There are more buildings like this that are kept up by heavy support. As a student I lived in an old house in the centre and you could feel the building move when a truck or bus passed. I had nightmares of the house falling down with me in it. The dreams stopped when I moved to a new home. That old block still stands though. It's been renovated. Apparently the construction is still solid. But I'm glad I don't live there any more.

part of it was built in 901-ish. it was a road house for weary travelers to rest and get a koldt krus øl (cold mug of beer)

The word "krus" is the same in Dutch, just spelled differently: kroes (the oe is a diphthong that sounds the same as the "u").
