I am thinking of doing a whole thread/post on locks and canals. I don't want to hijack this thread on canal boats because not all locks are just for canal boats - like the Panama Canal for instance, and the Plaquemine Locks - Dismal Swamp, the Virginia Cut etc

Yes. But these small boats like the ones in Mick's photo are usually deserted in Winter (so no smoke is seen from the chimney, if they have one at all). In the canal that runs below my apartment we have luxurious houseboats, solar panels on the roof, with year round residency and then there are small boats where the owners only start showing up in Spring and Summer, most often during the weekends, boating, swimming, etc.
