Kirk, the shots of this bird I have seen of you already have a morning feel about them in that it's obvious they weren't taken at high noon, say. But yes I agree, that early morning light is really beautiful. I don't know what "truck bed tents" are but it sounds like a plan! :D

Yes. I think he's closest the swamphens, which are closely related to coots and morehens. It's another New Zealand endemic. From 1898 to 1948 the bird was thought to be extinct. The population is now about 500. Having evolved without humans, they are quite tame.
