Bird Portraits - Post Yours!

Can this go here or to farm animals?;)

Good question! My purely personal view is that it's just confusing to have both a portraits thread and an all birds thread. I think they should be merged - it doesn't matter under what name. Perhaps one could also merge the Birds of Europe thread as well, though personally I prefer it being separate. Another possibility, but one that would be a lot of work for you, is to reorganise all three threads into two - one for European birds and one for North American birds. That would encourage threads for birds of other countries (I had one for New Zealand birds on FOPF and we already have one for Australian birds here), which might or might not be popular with others. Should one also merge birds in flight? Perhaps, but shooting birds in flight is an art in itself which probably deserves its own thread.
I like the Wild Birds of Europe thread. I started it back on POTN because the Bird Portraits and Bird in Flight threads were so big. I couldn't keep up. And I missed interaction in those threads. People were posting one pic after another and there was very little talk. The WBoE was the opposite. Lots of talk, lots of banter, great pics, and I learned new things about the very birds I shoot. So I started it up here too.

But no matter if we have a thread for every continent, we still want a general bird thread, not restricted to any location. I think the European and the Australian threads were more a way to separate those regions from the overwhelming American presence. To talk about the birds that we actually shoot. Not sure if that is the case at the moment here of course , probably not, but on the old POTN that was definitely the case. So it was nice to have our own little corner (and it was a small corner but the participants were pretty active).

The problem is that the more threads you merge the faster the resulting thread moves and that can make it difficult to keep up with, especially if you only visit the forum occasionally. Personally I like having threads for specific familes like waders, warblers etc (I started most of them). Threads organised on this basis ought to be manageable, I think, and would help the main thread to run at a more even pace. There are those who don't like these catch-all threads and prefer to post individual birds in their own thread. I'm fine with that - I've done it myself elsewhere in the past - but it is these threads that increase the overall number. Also I noticed that such threads often got fewer 'likes' than posts in the broader category threads, which suggests that some people were just not bothering to look at them. But ultimately it's a choice for the poster.
I personally have no problem at all with different threads for different species. Nor do I have a problem with people starting their own individual threads. But yes, those will get less views and Likes than images posted in the big threads.

So here is what I want to do:

Merge this thread with the Bird Portraits thread and rename it: Post Your Birds - Perched.
This at least will solve the "portrait" confusion.

I agree with your remark that birds in flight is "an art in itself" and does deserve its own thread.
So I suggest to rename the birds in flight thread similarly to: Post Your Birds - In Flight.

And I do want to keep the regional threads. They have a place on the forum. To remove them would be a loss. Also the species threads, the individual threads. I'm perfectly fine with them. It's like I said to the annoyed person back on FOPF: it's really everybody's choice if they want to open all the dedicated smaller threads and view the images or not.

So if nobody objects, that is what I will do.

So, it was brought to my attention that "perched" excludes birds on the ground walking, standing etc. Including all that in the title is a bad idea.

This doesn't work. I'm turning it back to Bird Portraits and explain what "portraits" mean in the opening post.

That's probably OK. Hopefully people will get the jist of the thread from the photos posted.

LOL Well, that was a nice exercise... :lolz:

I think so. Don't forget that the Portraits thread for birds has been around for a very long time and especially bird photographers will be familiar with it. I've added an explanation to my opening post. If people miss that and ask questions about it then we just have to explain it to them. :)

What the! It's weird because the sheep is up front and centered, like how the subject should be but it's not the animal that's in focus ... so which is the subject? Personally, I wouldn't have bothered posting it, the sheep is too distractive.
Oh come on, Kirk. Where's your sense of humour? :)
