Looks like you shot into the direction of a low sun. Good recovery though. Mine are usually unsalvable.
Yes, it was shot into the sun. In the RAW file the only thing properly exposed is the metal sign the bird is perched on. The bird itself is practically a silhouette. There were several swallows around, but this was the only one that offered itself up for a shot. I couldn't bring myself to ditch it.
 
From the archives: Great crested grebes.

I remember I was shooting around and through grasses and reeds. But I was awfully close to them. These are only cropped to frame them a bit better. The reason was that they knew me. I followed them around for a year and at first they would run but after a while they got used to me and stayed where they are. The parents would fall asleep with me at arm's length, like in these pics.
