With the thousands of species of birds in the world, this site could end up with a lot of bird threads and I personally feel like I'm missing out on seeing a lot of pics of birds because of it. Sure, I could go to every thread to see all the pics but going to that many threads is somewhat of a hassle, it's very time consuming and unnecessary. Anyone else feel the same way? Here's my suggestion. If everyone put their bird pics in one thread and used the 'type of bird in their comments', a person looking for a specific bird could easily find it using the search engine and look at nothing but that type of bird if that's what they want. This would make separate threads for every type of bird a thing of the past and make bird pics less fragmented. if most people are like me, they just want to look at all the birds, they aren't looking for specific types. I've noticed how many people simply post their bird shots of all types under the thread, "Portraits" so apparently, many people find it easier to just post there, like I do. For what I'm suggesting, a title like, "All Birds" would be more appropriate than 'portraits.' This site is still fairly new so I thought I should bring it up before everyone got too comfortable with how it is now.

I would have no problem with an "All Birds" thread, although a Portrait thread and another In Flight thread I think is still a good idea. We could call it All Birds: Portraits and All Birds: In Flight. The problem is how to get people to post in it and nowhere else. You can see it on other sites as well: people started separate bird species threads: Hummingbirds, Cardinals, Herons, etc. And more even, like: Birds in Pairs and Are You Looking At Me? and what not.

And there are also still people who prefer to start their own individual threads when they post their pics and I am totally fine with that.

I said once that people start the threads they need. You can't really control that unless you start being rather strict. I don't want to do that. I want people to have as much freedom as possible on the board to post their pictures where they want. So yes, I too get lost and miss images because they're in threads that have moved off radar, but not sure what to do about it.

Maybe other bird photographers can chime in, give an opinion?

If more people agree, I can rename the two main threads to:

All Birds - Portraits
All Birds - In Flight

Or something like that. Maybe that will invite people to post these threads more and not in species specific threads? But in the end it's the members who decide where they post their images.

One of the problems I found with both POTN and the other place was that with so many people posting the Bird Portraits thread was so active it was difficult to keep up with - to the extent that I actually stopped trying to follow all the portraits on the previous sites. Personally I find threads for particular familes of birds more easy to handle. That's why I started threads for kingfishers, finches, waders, etc. I find it easier to do the sifting at the thread title pages than via a search, but that's just me.

Your response shows that different people have different preferences on how and where they like to post images. So probably just keep it as it is.

I was just a little concerned because another site that we are very familiar with is having trouble for the reasons I mentioned. People are complaining that shots of birds that aren't portraits are being posted under "Portraits", just like how it's being done here. I was just trying to avoid that problem, but I understand everything you said as well. Now I'm thinking ... Just keep everything as is, "portraits" and "birds in flight" so as not to disturb the natives, and just make a new thread called "All Birds" so that way no one has to search for the right bird thread, which isn't any fun doing, and avoid putting it in an inappropriate thread.

That’s a good idea, Kirk. I like it. I started it, called it The All Birds Thread. It was all I could think of at this late hour for me. I can change the name. But tomorrow. Turning in now. Gotta sleep! :D:zzz:
