We spent a lot of the time at the beach, and my dad liked taking photos of people at the beach. There were two main beaches - Nobska beach which was out of town about a 20 minute walk, but was a nice sandy beach, and Stony Beach which was right in town - a 5 or 10 minute walk, but had many rocks. I liked Stony Beach even though it was rocky. There was almost no surf, it went out shallow a long way and there was a sand bar and a raft that you could swim to. It was here that my dad taught me how to walk on rocks barefooted

I liked Stony beach because there were a lot of hermit crabs. I decided to do an experiment. I collected a lot of the hermit crabs and decided to see if they preferred any specific color. My dad's lab had salt water tables (which were tables with salt water running through them. I put gel sheets of various colors down and put the crabs I collected into the salt table. I came in several times a day and recorded how many crabs were on each table. My conclusion was that the hermit crabs don't care about color.

Nobska beach needed a car or you had to be OK with a long walk.
The lighthouse was at the other end of the beach. It is located near the division between Buzzards Bay, Nantucket Sound and Vineyard Sound

Sometimes a group would get together and go out for a picnic at another beach farther away. Ed and Barney are in this group along with the Boells and the group from the lab
My mom is the one with the long braids on the left - Ed Athearn is far right
Ed Boell in the blue shirt, and Anita Zorzoli is sitting on the other side of the fire with a white hat
The picnic was at the Sand Dunes, and we had fun sliding down the dunes together. Anita had a two piece suit and the person behind her pushed some of the sand into her suit so when she stood up she had to shake the sand out . We called her Sandy Panties after that.
