In Paris, we took a side trip to Fontainebleau

After my dad finished with the conference in Paris, we got on a boat train. The train took us to the coast where we boarded a boat. The train was full and the boat was also full. The weather was quite rough. The seas were breaking over the deck where some of the luggage was stored. My mother and my sister and I did not have a problem with seasickness, but my dad did (so he took no photos) and so did many other passengers and I think some of the crew. So my mother found a seat for us by a window in the lounge and ordered hot tea for us. Her alternate for motion sickness was Canada Dry Ginger Ale, because that has real ginger in it, but it isn't available everywhere, so tea was the second choice.
I think most people were happy to see the white cliffs of Dover. After the boat docked, we continued by train. I am pretty sure that we spent the night in London before we went to Oxford for the conference on the 24th.
Piccadilly Circus
Piccadilly Circus, July 1950- me, my sister and my mom
My sister is in a grey suit (age 10), and I am in a green suit (age 12)
In 1950, I was told that the statue in the middle of Piccadilly Circus was a statue of Cupid or Eros.
I now know that isn't completely accurate. I thought that Piccadilly was a very large place (and very scary to cross on foot). I also remember being told this was the crossroads of the world. So if you waited here for an hour, you'd see someone you knew. And when we were here, my dad met an old college friend. Probably not too surprising since they were headed for the same conference.
We didn't have time to tour London at this time. we came back later
My dad had an additional paper to give at the International Anatomical Congress which took place in Oxford England from 24-28 July.
