#4 Amsterdam - The Blue Line

This entry is in the series Go to Amsterdam First (1950, 1965, 2009, 2016, 2018, 2022)
I had really wanted to ride the blue line which starts AND stops at the same place, doing a complete circuit. So we got off at the City Hall stop and waited for the Blue Line.

I had thought we'd get off at City Hall again and take the red line to the Rembrandt stop and get on the green line and complete that, but B was tired, so I gave up and got off at the end of the blue line about 1640.

Rosalie, a great read again, but I'm going to correct you on one thing.

The NEMO and the Maritime Museum are two different things.

The NEMO is a science museum (and very interactive, it's great).

The Scheepvaartmuseum (The Maritime Museum) is dedicated to our maritime history.

Okay, thanks.

No, Nemo is a Latin word that means "nobody".

One of the amazing things though about the building itself is how it is constructed. It is built on the foundations of the IJ-tunnel that runs underneath. When you enter the IJ-tunnel from the NEMO side of the river it's like you are entering the cargo hold of a ship.

I have a photo of that. I can post it here in a comment if you would allow that.

Tbat would be fine. I think I've been in that tunnel under NEMO at some point - maybe in 2022.

I thought it might be some initials - like NOLA is sometimes short for New Orleans Louisiana, and NoVA sometimes stands for northern Virginia. And I understand that the Nova car didn't do well in Spanish speaking countries because it meant No Go

That's what I thought too until I read an article about the museum and learned it was a word.

Here is a shot of the road leading into the tunnel. It's a location that you normally cannot get to on foot or on a bicycle (I'm always on a bike), but that particular day I was in luck because some maintenance was being done in the tunnel, so traffic was blocked and the police let me go where I wouldn't have been able to go on any other day. I wasn't very close but I think you can see how the road leads into the tunnel. And the NEMO looks like a ship that you drive into.
