Armed Forces Day Visit in 1970 and Jeopardy

This entry is in the series New York City - Waypoint, Day Trip, or Destination
The two older girls and I took the train up to New York City where the Intrepid was docking for Armed Forces Day.. Before he got there, I tried out for and made it onto the old Jeopardy program with Art Fleming.

When the carrier arrived, we watched as it came around the corner of the cruise ship dock - the overhang of the carrier deck knocked some of the roof of the pier into the water.

After we got back, they called me and told me that I had made the show. So I took the train back to the city. Art Fleming was the MC then, and the money was less - $10 to $50 for the first board and $100 to $500 for the second board. And whatever you won, you could keep even if you weren't the highest scorer.. In those days, the show was taped in New York.

This was taken during rehearsal for the show before the ones I was on. Art Fleming did the rehearsals and warm-ups himself. He was a tall man, and very nice.

I won the first two shows, and earned enough money for the down payment on a pick-up truck. But the third show, I was having a little morning sickness and it slowed my reactions down so I didn't win. Plus I absolutely did not know the answer to the Final Jeopardy question.

I would not want to be on the current show with Alec Trebec, even though the prizes are ten times greater now than they were. IMO, he has changed the show to the detriment of the contestants. He made it a guessing game as to how quickly you could ring in, instead of letting the first person who thought of the answer get to answer it. He said he wanted to be able to read the whole question before people were allowed to ring in, but someone who reads and thinks faster is now at a disadvantage.
