Weekend Task #37: My first time!

Ed has asked me to wrap this up as he is travelling.

So I’m closing the competition. No more voting. I’ll be back with the results in a few minutes.

Results are quite a bit different than I had expected. And I find it's not pleasant at all to have to announce the winner if the winner is yourself.

Levina with 18 points
EdC and StephenM tied in second place with 10 points
Jan in third place with 8 points

That's it. I hope I counted right (@StephenM ?)

Congratulations to EdC and Stephen for second place. And to Jan for third place.

And a big thank you to Ed for hosting this week's WET.

I'm just going to recount. I was placed higher than I expected, but first place is unchanged. Probably I missed something in the scoring method.

Interesting subject - I have an idea I might try.

#1 Jan
#2 StephenM
#3 Rosalie (greatgrandma)

When Jan posted his collage I thought: well, that's it then, that's the winner this week. I'm surprised that didn't turn out to be so. Yes, the pics in the collage are of a darling little infant but I think it's the picture that literally shows us a first time. We don't even have to see the theme to know that this is a newly born and these are firsts for her/him. I thought it was a perfect match this week.

After that things got really hard as I really liked all of the other entries. I liked Lesley's leucistic squirrel, EdC's "first and last" time and Rob's first bird on this forum ( ). But in the end I chose Stephen's first large format pic in second place because I think it's a great image. And I picked Rosalie's photo as third because it's from 1958 and as such has a ring to it that I find hard to resist.

But I did struggle with the second and third positions. A lot. Because we only knew they were firsts because we were told it. And they were all nice pictures. That made it hard.

I recounted after reading this, but my results remain the same.

Rob made a spreadsheet for us, which is a big help. It's here, in the sticky.

I found voting very difficult. My first choice was an obvious one to me, partly because I like black and white, partly because the composition on lighting were spot on, and partly because it's the sort of subject and treatment that I could never manage. After that, it was almost pot luck. I don't like voting based on difficulty rather than artistic merit, and I had difficulty deciding. Rosalie wasn't in my top three but could easily have been.

On another forum, the scoring is done by poll, and you're allowed to vote for three entries without giving places. On the whole, I think the method here is preferable, as it's adding weighting.

I had no difficulty deciding the first two. Levina's was, for me, way ahead of the other in artistry and Jan's baby was just so adorable and fitted the theme. Third place I found very difficult. In the end EdC's and Lesley-B's entries were those that kept drawing my eyes. I loved EdC's photo of the praying mantises with its grim caption, but in the end I gave my vote to Lesley-B for its unusual subject.

I didn't know what a leucistic squirrel was so I didn't know how momentous that was. And I completely misunderstood Jan's entry as I thought "My" first time being a model meant it was photos of him as a baby.

It was a toss-up for me between StephenM and Levina, and I appreciated the dark humor of the preying mantises.

As for my picture- I probably could have picked a better photo out of the first roll of film, but I knew that photo was the first I took because it had part of the leader in it. Sometimes I make it B&W and that made the light exposure on the right side less obvious, but I wanted to show the whole thing - flaws and all.
