Weekend Task #36: Negative Space.

As it's now way past the deadline I am closing the voting window. So no more voting please.

Now we wait for Ed to wrap it up. :)

My apologies for being late. I'm dealing with a case of Covid and am spending most of my time sleeping.

By my count, first place is EdC with 9 points, Levina is in second with 7, and we had a tie (GreatGrandma and Terry) at 5 each. Congrats to all of you.

Oh gosh, Ed, I'm so sorry. Go back to bed, sleep, take care of yourself. I had Covid last year so I know what it's like. Best wishes, get well soon!!

Thank you, Ed.

Congratulations to EdC for winning this week's WET competition.

And congratulations to Rosalie and Terry for a shared third place.
And thank you for the votes on my entry.

It's all yours EdC. What will be the new challenge?

Wow. I had not expected that. I posted the wrong image! I had a very nice black and white version, but I posted the original. I'll think about the new WET, but it won't be posted until tomorrow afternoon European time (I have anti-malarials, press interviews, and other tasks to attend to until then). Thanks, EdW. For my own assessment, I really Like Terry's and Levina's images – both much better than mine.

The new one is up. Levina, the sticky does not seem to work exactly as expected. Maybe it is me. I can close the competition on Monday at noon, but would you be able to do the tallying for me? I am somewhere in the air over you on Tuesday. Thanks in advance.

I'll check it out. No worries.
EDIT: looks fine to me. Only added a bit of colour.

Sure, I can do it for you, no problem. Safe flight!

I couldn't get the sticky actually to open in a new post. I had to copy and paste ... or maybe I am reading more into a sticky than was intended. And thanks.

The best way is to quote and then insert that quote in the new thread and then remove the quote tags.

There's a short tutorial in the Sticky thread on how to do it. Once you know it, it's easy.

Thanks for the compliment Ed. Your picture is almost alive due to the way the human eye works. As you look at one part, the blind spot of your other eye causes what almost looks like motion, and for a moment becomes very sharp, almost a 3D moment.
Pretty sure I’m not explaining this very well, but it’s what I see.
Dave, your picture really spoke to me. You see the subject is really focused on his job. I often have trouble figuring what the story of the photo is telling, no problem with this one. Maybe it didn’t quite fit the subject, but IMHO it’s a great photo.

Fortunately it doesn't affect the end result, but cnce again, could I please ask people to use posters' handles rather than their real names in this competion? It's unreasonable to expect people to remember who's who. Elsewhere it doesn't matter.

Congrats to the winner and runners up.

Although 'negative space' is often mentioned in books/ youtube/ forums/ blogs when compositional rules are discussed, to me it is never as precise as lets say a rule of thirds or symmetry. Given the wide variety of shots for this weeks WET I think it shows that it is a compostional rule/ technique that is multi-interpretable and made it hard to pick a top 3. Also because negative space can be 'collateral' with other genres. For example the image of Levina clearly has negative space, but I see that more like abstract, shilouette or high key than that 'negative space' would come into mind when looking at the photo.

For me the photo of Jason (Jack Dawe) was the winner as the big negative black space really accentuates the orange part of the eclipse. The almost uni-tone sea and sky, but with just enough gradient for separation, make the surroundings of the lighthouse mute in the photo which I think is a clear example of negative space as well accentuatie the lighthouse as the main subject.
The mute tone of mist and water in Terry's photo make it a negative space and the shilouetted ducks as the subject stand out without giving the idea that the photo is about the shilouette. The negative space accentuates the tranquility of a foggy morning and the proportion with respect to the ducks, express the wideness or emptiness of the landscape.

The fog in the photo of EdC that won this week's WET does not accentuate anything in such a way, so I did not really consider it to be negative space from a compositional point of view. It is without a doubt a very nice photo, but since the elephant (what could have been the main subject) is also faded by the fog, to me, the photo is more about the foggyness than the elephant and thereby making the fog the theme of the photo, so the fog is no longer negative space in that respect.
The photos of Rob and Dave were fun submissions, but to me the link to the WET theme of 'negative space' was a tad far fetched rather than the photos clearly expressing the concept of 'negative space'. But as stated at the start of my reaction it is a challeging subject to judge.
