Weekend Task #21: Celebrating

1. RDWP
2. greatgrandma

The only two that apparently fulfilled the June criterion.
Ed, be aware that if you cast only two votes they will be discarded.

(We can discuss themes and their interpretation after the winner has been declared.)

The sun is past the yardarm at the Royal Observatory: voting is closed. Back soon with the tally so we can all celebrate the winner.

Mea culpa for not explaining the criteria very clearly for this WET. I had not intended that submissions be restricted to June celebrations, but I certainly can see now how one could think that, since all the examples I gave to prime the pump were for June. I think that was more for justifying why it was a suitable for my choice of this theme this week. Sorry for the confusion!

I assumed that the most important part of the challenge was that it be in June and that it wasn't just a celebration at any time. It would have been easy to just find a celebration picture to post. I did have a photo of fireworks from a Disney cruise in June but I didn't think of it because it wasn't for a specific celebration - they did it every cruise.

Obviously other people assumed that the Celebration part was more important than the date. I tend to be a little nitpicky I guess. There were a lot of really nice celebration photos to vote for if I had not been so focused on the June part. :(

You are right - entirely my fault. It would have been clearer if I had no text after the competition title.

I should have known that the title was the most important part, and not the examples. I think this is a holdover from the mini challenges on DigiGrin- There, I looked at the examples and tried to figure out what the person setting the challenge would like to see so that my entries would have the best chance of being voted for.

But to celebrate this week's winners:

First place and fireworks for Levina with 11 points
Second place and a banner for InPhoto with 8 points
Third place and a balloon for Jan1977 and RDWP with 6 each

Thanks, all, for your good work. Take it away Levina!

@RDWP

Thanks very much, Rob. Not a pic I thought had any chance of winning.

Congratulations to inphoto for the coveted second place and to Jan and you, Rob for a tied third position.

I have to think about a new theme. I will be back shortly.

As to the theme, I think themes are always open to different interpretations. If set too narrow it will exclude people who are unable to comply with it.

In this week's theme I had no June celebrations to enter. The only June celebrations I know here are Father's Day and (this year) Pentacost. My dad died 28 years ago and I have no pics of Father's Day. And Pentacost? Not so much.

But honestly, I thought the celebration was what mattered most. Nevertheless, I thought it best to not choose pics of Xmas or New Year's Eve or something that was related to a very specific non-June time of year, and chose the Turkish wedding instead as these can take place in any month, including June.

New challenge is up: Water in Motion.

Since we haven't tried the host picking the winner, I thought we might try that this week, so this will not be a voting week. It also means I won't be submitting an image.

If you give me a few moments, I will post a few samples of what I mean with the theme.

Congratulations to Levina and all other participants. I interpreted the theme "Celebration" as the major part of the challenge and the description more as the explanation of Rob on how he came to the theme (which he more or less indicated a few post before in this thread). But as we witnessed through this thread, the byline caused some confusion (understandably).

I did not cast my votes this week as I simply could not decide on a #1, 2 and 3. To me there was no photo clearly more appealing to me than other photos and neither of them were more or less complying with the theme than the others.

Thank you for the 2nd place and congratulations to Levina for the 1st place and to all participants.
I liked Levina's photo because there is the same custom in Greece, the groom and his kin walk to the bride's house to take her with a lot of dancing and live music. unfortunately this custom is not possible in the cities or when the bride lives very far, but can be done sometimes locally. Of course there is always dancing after the wedding in a reception hall.
We did this in a small village in Sweden and the locals were surprised!

Rules for voting are very questionable, imho.
#1 says ...."may vote" meaning if I like only one, that my vote shoud count.
#5 "Voters must cast 3 votes. Any less and the votes will be discarded"
I protest this this mandatory exclusion of rule 5

Terry, rule #1 simply means that as soon as the competition is closed, anyone is allowed to vote. Rule #5 then specifies how one is to vote.
That first rule was borrowed from the Fixed-Lens Photo Challenge competition back on POTN.

I will rephrase the first rule in the template to avoid further confusion.

Levina, I also wonder why we need Rule 5. Why not allow voters fewer than 3 choices - as long as no more than 3? A ballot isn't spoiled if you choose to vote for the mayor and skip the councillors (or the dog-catcher!)
