Weekend Task #14 - Spring

Oh my! I did them in a hurry and it seems i messed it up. I think there was an Excel sheet in potn days for helping in counting.
Rob (RDWP)) has one. He gave me a copy but lost it when my PC crashed

Excel is our friend. If Rob still has it, he can maybe share it again. I created one myself, which I can share, but maybe the one Rob had is easier with more clarification.

I thought Jeff's ducklings were adorable and yesterday I saw two sets of ducklings - one a duck on the grounds where I live and one a Canada goose with goslings near a pond at the hospital where I went for my last neurosurgery checkout. Didn't get a chance to take photos of either of them.

I did not understand EdC's picture because he didn't title it - until someone remarked that he and Levina were thinking outside the box and I suddenly realized that the insect was a springtail. I don't like it when photos lack a title. A picture may be worth 1000 words, but maybe with a title it would be 1005

Hmmm, I see Jeff hasn't been around yet and there's no new challenge up. I know he has a few things on his plate right now. Let's wait until noon GMT, okay?

I didn't get that photo either, although it was a nice photo. But when you say it is a "springtail" I can see the link to the theme ;)

I don't know about you but I am always struggling with choosing what I think are the three best pics in a WET week. But this week I found it exceptionally hard. So much so that I almost didn't vote. But about half an hour or so before the voting window closed I decided not voting was an act of cowardice, a cop out, so I voted.

I think Jason/Jack's lambs were adorable and well photographed and with one of the little darlings looking straight at us. I also loved Rosalie's lambs, darting in what seems a meadow. Lamb-time is a sure sign of spring all right. It brings back memories of my childhood (I was born and raised in the country before the family moved elsewhere). February was "lammertijd" lamb time (maybe there is another expression in English for it?).

Young birds are also a sure sign of spring. And I preferred Jeff's pic over the other bird pics because it's very well taken at a fairly low angle and the ducklings are adorable.

But I kept going back to Martin's pic. Flowers budding and blooming are also a sign of spring. And I thought Martin's pic was really beautiful. And that for me was the deciding factor in the end: Martin on #1, Jason #2, Jeff #3.

I didn't want to have the same subject twice in my voting results: hence just one flower pic, one lamb pic, one bird pic. And yes, no bug pic. Although Ed's bug is a terrific capture, I associate bugs more with high summer (July, August), not particularly with spring.

But great work by everyone. The fact that it was so difficult to choose says a lot.
I thought Martin's photo was really beautiful as was inphoto, but I think of poppies as more of a summer flower. I put the ducklings first though because flowers are the default photo for spring and I thought the duckings were more innovative.

My lambs were on a Yorkshire farm and it was the first time the ewes had been let out of the barn after lambing. Jason's photo was prettier than mine but I wasn't sure that the lambs were real because tey looked so pretty.

Last week Jason and Jack (I think) were counted separately because some people voted for the Forum name and some people knew his real name. It wasn't until I asked who Jack was that the two votes were combined. It didn't make any difference to the winner, but I think Jason/Jack moved from 3rd to 2nd. Some Forum names are hard for me to remember, so if I know the persons actual name, I'd rather use that. Some people have their real name in their signature or in the photo block on the left and I think it would be OK to use that name in those cases.

I think most have their name in the user window (Martin in his sig) and those that don't, have user names that are or contain their actual name. Like you I prefer to use people's actual name. Maybe we could just check results for a while until everybody knows who's who?

I don't see the names on my smartphone, just the username.

I was convinced that the rules said "Do not title your image"! Doooh.
It was actually a juvenile planthopper, Issus coleoptratus. It is a very common here in the spring.

I meant when I wanted to know if it was noon yet in GMT. Not about the names. I was going to quote someone but the quote wasn't the right one and I failed to fix that - sorry

I think that was Rob (RDWP) who made that, on POTN.

EDIT - These now link directly to the Sticky source for these files:

The Spreadsheet (plus an example, completed) available here:

Hope the notes explain it, but let me know any questions or any problems downloading.

Perhaps the most useful aspect is that it has various row and column checks so the "checksum" numbers won't match if you make an error, e.g., if - when counting - you enter two Firsts and a Third for a competitor by mistake.

Cheers, R
