It was suggested to me (thank you, Martin!) to merge the two old POTN Fixed-Lens and Digital Speed challenges into one game named Weekend Task, WET for short. I think it's an excellent idea. So let's start this. The competition will end next Monday to Tuesday night at midnight GMT. Let's see how it goes. Without further ado:

WET #1 - Theme: Beginnings

The theme "beginnings" seems perfect to "begin" this challenge with. So, show us your interpretation of Beginnings.

-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-
This challenge ends at midnight GMT on 3 > 4 February. The winner will be announced shortly thereafter.

The WET Rules:
  1. Camera: Any CAMERA is allowed (images from scanned film are also allowed);
  2. Post only ONE photo;
  3. Time: Any on-topic photo taken at any time is eligible, although photos that have won other competitions should NOT be entered (meaning won competitions here, so no problem as of yet!);
  4. Size: Maximum image size is 1600px on the long end. Minimum size is 800px;
  5. Post Processing: Do whatever you like, and the host will decide if it works;
  6. Title your image;
  7. Posting: ONE PHOTO per photographer per challenge. List camera model & lens used. Post brief EXIF data: ISO, shutter speed and aperture (when images are attached the EXIF will be added below the images automatically);
  8. Commenting: No commenting and no Likes during challenge. After the challenge is closed, Likes are very welcome and discussion is encouraged;
  9. The host chooses the top 3 with brief feedback on the entries;
  10. Keep it clean, and both family and work safe;
  11. Have lots of FUN;
  12. This text is available in a sticky here. Copy the text and paste it in the new thread.
>> THE WINNER ALWAYS SETS THE THEME FOR THE NEXT CHALLENGE, POSTS IT AND JUDGES IT - BE PREPARED <<

PS: the rules aren't carved into stone. Yet... :LOL: If you think they need amending, don't hesitate to say so!

Gunnera manicata. These young leaves, about the size of a cheese cracker will be bigger than a large rhubarb leaf.

So, it's time to call the winner, yes?

Oh wait, I posted a pic myself. That's not right, is it? Not when the host picks the winner. I was following the rules of the Fixed-Lens Photo Week challenge!
Actually, I think we should talk about that. Does the host pick the winner or do we vote?

I believe Martin prefers the host picking the winner so they can give a bit of feedback on the entries and that encourages discussion.

But I think if we go with voting we could add a new rule or request: that voters, after the tallying of the votes is done and the winners declared, could maybe tell us why they voted as they did?

Just a suggestion and something to think about. At this point I'm trying to think of options.

So for now, I'm giving this to Rob (hi Rob!). For no other reason really than that I cannot resist a pup like that.

I liked the other entries too. All strong beginnings of something.

Thank you for playing this new, or maybe not so new, game.

Let's see if we can get more people to participate in the second week of the game.

Take it away, Rob.

That's a good idea - as long as people do add comments

One of the things I always liked about voting is that the host can play too instead of having to skip that week. And if s/he wins, the runner up will host the next challenge so that we don't have the same host in two consecutive weeks.

Personally I like the voting system, also because I really REALLY dislike having to pick a winner. But - and this is important - I am following you guys in this, so whatever your preferences are, we'll do that. And also, if we start with one system, it's not written in stone. We could change it at any time if players feel the other system would be better after all.

Well, let's try it and see how it goes

Just here now! As Martin notes, I do like the voting system best, but I'm game for either. Would it be too complex / confusing if the Host for the week chose the method - i.e., Judge or Jury?

What an interesting idea! I like it. We could try it, see how it goes.

I would need to modify the template in the sticky so we have two sets of rules there: one for the voting process and the other for the host picking the winner. No problem.

So, let's try this. And, Rob, since you are the next host and prefer the voting system, I think you can basically use the Fixed-Lens rules for now?

Martin? Would you be okay with this solution too?
