This is a tutorial that was a sticky at the old forum, POTN (Photography on the NET), written by Jamie Wexler. He posted this tutorial back in 2007 but it is still as relevant today as it was back then.

Before POTN closed I exported the first page to a pdf which can be downloaded here.

The pdf only contains the first page of the thread, as all the following pages are expressions of gratitudes ("thank you", "this is great", "very helpful" etc.)/

When I was 11 or 12, I grew quite a bit taller and started to get breasts so I was slumping. My mom wanted me to stand up straight so she gave my sister and me modeling lessons at a regular agency for photographic and runway models. I don't know how she persuaded them because it was definitely out of their comfort zone. But one of the things they told us was that when posing for still pictures, we should put one foot out in front and twist at the waist to angle our hips sideways to the plane of the photo, so that the total width of our hips would be concealed. Although the tutorial above does more technical stuff, there was also a mention of that little trick for posing.

Interesting. Did the lessons help, did you pose like that for a photo after that?
 
I only did one modeling assignment and it was a show so I wasn't posing for pictures. And I was only about 12 years old so I wasn't very wide yet. This was me when I was 12.

If I thought about it, I would do that, but I never felt 'fat' as a teen, and I wasn't.

The thing that I might have wanted to reduce was my bust at that age. My dad took many photos of us so I learned not to worry about it. And later when I was obese, I really didn't worry too much about how I looked.

Sounds familiar. I was early and used to slump a bit to hide what I had as all my girlfriends were still flat as could be. Luckily it didn't take long for them to catch up. :D
 
Frankly, this sounds like body-shaming to me.

If a woman is comfortable with who she is, there's no reason to make her look like what she isn't.

Personally, I prefer the 'curvy' figure. Would've been called 'voluptuous' way back when.
Modern beauty standards seem anorexic and unhealthy to me, and from an unrealistic viewpoint.
Just as personalities differ, so should bodies be, and just as acceptable.
 
It takes a great deal of confidence to accept not just a normal curvy figure but a BMI of over 30 which is obesity. I was pretty normal up through the birth of my third child. I was 5'7.5" (or 171.45 cm) and weighed between 125 and 140 lbs. (57 to 64 kg) and I gained about 20 lbs (9kg) with each pregnancy. This is a normal albeit curvy weight

This is a photo of me in 1969 with my dad and my three girls. I was 32 years old. But when I got pregnant with my fourth child I gained a lot more weight - I was up to 180 lbs and I didn't lose it after he was born. When I started working full time, I gained about 5 lbs a year. I would diet and lose it and then gain it back plus some. I finally reached a weight of 265 lbs. which is a BMI of 40.9. Anything over 30 is obese. I was fairly aerobically fit because I was swimming and walking, but I wasn't just curvy. I wasn't just fat. I was obese.

Sometime in the late 90s I decided that dieting didn't work so I wouldn't do it anymore. But it took that long for me to just accept my size and I was married to someone who didn't object to my size even though throughout our marriage I always weighed more than he did, and I had four children and a job that I liked. I was reasonably comfortable with myself. But it took me a long time to get there. I didn't lose much weight until I started going to the pool for a water exercise class 3 days a week. I went from 241 lbs in 2016 to 205 lbs in 2019 without doing any dieting. This gave me a BMI of just over 30. In no danger of being skinny.
