US Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw WAGB-83

built during WWII to keep the great lakes shipping lanes open so iron ore could be moved from the far west end of Lake Superior to the south end of Lake Michigan (Duluth Minnesota to Gary Indiana) and to Lake Erie (Cleveland Ohio).

it was deliberately built too big for the Welland Canal to prevent it from ever being transferred out of the Great Lakes (Welland Canal connects the lakes to the Atlantic).

decommissioned because of costs to operate and maintain.. to ensure it never moving again, ALLEGEDLY the diesel engines had concrete poured into their cylinders. the engines cant be removed without cutting open the ship.

now a museum in Mackinaw City Michigan
