A blood clot, right? How’s that going?
Yeah, DVT. Getting there slowly. It feels like it's mostly gone, I'll go in for another Ultrasound in a few days just to see exactly what's going on. Wandering around a bit more now, still wearing compression socks, and keeping my feet up when not moving. Well & truly over it, let me tell you.

I can imagine. Bummer it happened on your trip.

Absolutely. Without getting all conspiratorial, I'm pretty sure it's got something to do with side effects from the Covid vaccine. 20+ years ago after a foot op, I got one (DVT). Flown plenty of times since, no issues. I had a Hip operation just before Covid, no problems there. And that's a pretty long recovery just sitting/laying around before you can move properly.
I'm one of those freaks that can't catch it, had to isolate on 2 separate occasions with family (on holidays -again), every single person in the house (10 or so people) got it except me. We worked right through the whole Covid thing, me & one other bloke were the only ones in the whole factory who didn't catch it. Get on a plane after Covid and bang, a DVT sat me on my @rse. Doctors did not disagree when I asked about it, it does seem to be one of the complications. Pretty damn annoying.

Blood clots are a known side effect of the Covid vaccine, sure. It doesn’t happen often, but it happens. And it sucks if you’re one of the unlucky ones it happens to. But I don’t think you can get it several years later. Unless you had another jab recently.

Well, that's the thing. I thought I'd been getting small cramps in my leg for the last year or so. As I work a pretty physical job, and sweat heaps. Cramps are not uncommon. Turns out that was in all probability, not the case. The Doctors said that the clots/blockages were over about a 15cm section of blood vessel, and had started a while back. That's why I asked the question. Walking time bomb.

You never know. But whatever it's caused by, it's nasty. And some people seem to be more prone to it than others. Maybe on long flights book two seats so you can have your feet up?

Isn't moving around, walking, good for this? I remember my mum had an operation once and there was the risk of a blood clot. She was encouraged to walk but not to stand still. If she had to stand still, like when she was doing the dishes, or waiting in line in the supermarket etc. she had to walk on the spot (I don't know the proper expression in English for that, walking without going anywhere, just lifting your leg, left/right/left/right) to keep the blood flowing. People looked at her funny...

Yeah, all of that. I did/do whatever leg exercises I can when sitting in my seat on the plane, like scrunching my toes, tilting my feet forward's and backwards, got up and walked around a couple of times too. I've flown 10 hour flights numerous times pre Covid, with no issues, for some reason this one got me.
For the flight home we've booked seats just behind business class, where you can stretch your legs out a bit. The wife has bought one of those telescoping collapsible stool things, so hopefully there's a little bit of room I can stretch out my leg. And I can get up and go for a walk at any time, without clambering over people. Hopefully that works out.

Sounds like a good plan. Fingers crossed!
