I have deleted my previous Powershot attempts. Not that this is that much better, but at least I used the R5m2 and the RF 100L macro and the IQ is loads better.

Patrick, looking at the EXIF you used flash for all your flower pics. I’m going to try that next time.

I use flash with almost all my macro photos(used to use the MT-24EX but now the 600EX-RT with AK diffusor https://akdiffuser.com/ ). Either there's not enough light or in direct sunlight the light is to harsh.
I often use back-button AF to get approximate focus followed by moving slightly forwards or backwards(6x magnification helps), for macro I disengage AF from shutter button.
If I know I'll be around MFD I switch to MF on the lens, turn focus ring to MFD and just move camera, with MF using focus peaking is possible.
