Old and recent compacts and smartphones do the job quickly and easy, Dslrs and mirrorless are way more complicated and incapable at times.

Maybe I should replace the old Powershot with a modern equivalent, but also simply, with a fixed lens. Any recommendations that wouldn't break the bank?

I'm not sure they do. I see zoemini and vlogging kits but not the traditional Powershot SX point-and-shoot cameras. At least not on the Dutch site.

I processed one more of the shots I took for this thread. It's the little hook of an earring that goes through the ear. I took it to Photoscape X (my new snapshot editor with tons of presets and filters and what have you), and applied an overlay. I quite like the result.
