Looking north from the top of Kiamichi Mountain, down into the Kiamichi River Valley. The mountain to the left is Rich Mountain, which goes into Arkansas and ends at Mena. The mountain to the right is Winding Stair Mountain. The little crossroads in the valley is Big Cedar. President Kennedy spoke in a pasture at Big Cedar to dedicate the newly opened US-259 highway that goes south over the mountain and into Broken Bow and Idabel. Both my parents went to school at Whitesboro, OK, about 10 miles west from Big Cedar. I taught school at Whitesboro, OK also west of Big Cedar for one year. I thought I'd like being in the mountains, but I began to feel closed in. We were in the valley between Kiamichi Mt and Winding Stair Mt. I like mountains, but I also like horizons that are more than two miles away.

Kiamichi River. It's just a creek here, headwater is a few miles back east. It runs in a big C shape for 177 miles and empties into the Red River. Two dams on the river create Sardis Lake near Clayton, OK and Hugo Lake near Sawyer, OK

Impressive landscape, Terry. I love the first in particular because of the amazing view and the foreground colours.

That's me too. I'm always out of my element in mountainous terrain. It makes me feel uncomfortable. My country is flat as a pancake and I need to see the horizon.
