Foundations of Photography - From theory to vision: learn to see, think, and photograph with intent

Foundations of Photography by Stephen M. Batey

This resource explores the foundations of photography as the key to creative freedom. It looks at the technical side not as an end in itself, but as a means to express what you see and feel with intention rather than chance.

By understanding how exposure, focus, and composition interact, you’ll learn to see the possibilities in every scene. Photography, like any art form, combines knowledge with practice. Once you know what your tools...

someone had asked me about photography 'stuff' once about 15 years ago so i wrote a couple of short 'basics of photography' papers.

one on overall exposure, one on shutter speed priority, aperture preferred, and one on manual. very very basic and ive since shared them with about 3 people. one guy who has a little bit of learning disability (he posts a lot on Facebook and has some issues with grammar or using the correct word) read them and said he didnt understand any of it.

i offered to go out shooting with him one day but 2 years later, nope... might have been too overwhelming. he likes his pictures and thats whats important.

That's started me thinking about why we take photos. Is it to produce something we like, something someone else likes (so we can make money or just please them), or something to impress others to inflate our egos? What have I missed?

I'll answer that myself. Perhaps we just like taking pictures, the act itself. Or to document a too rapidly changing world.

i the post your buildings thread, i mentioned that someone shared a photo of a building that is now gone and so i walked down the main street through town and shot photos of each of the storefronts/buildings from an angle to the right, straight on, and then from the left. just to kind of document the buildings and businesses. id probably NEVER have done that if i had to shoot film to do it but with electrons, its so easy and cheap...

it does stroke my ego to have someone compliment me on an image i made. not going to lie!!!
