The Great Sand Dunes is right across the Sangre de Cristo mountains from were my dad was brought up in the Wet Mountain Valley. But there's no road through - you have to go down around the south end of the mountains and come back up the other side.
(Westcliffe and Silver Cliff are only one mile apart so they are on top of each other on the map

From Silver Cliff we went to my aunt and uncle's house in Brighton.

When we got to Brighton, we found that Aunt Alice had broken her wrist. She still welcomed us hospitably, and we were able to use her washing machine and she packed lunches for the next part of the trip
